Lighthouse – Galle

The Galle Lighthouse, also known as Pointe de Galle Light, is Sri Lanka’s oldest light station. It was built in 1939 and stands 26.5 meters high. Originally, the light was a glass prism lens floating in a mercury bath, powered by a weight-driven mechanism. The lighthouse is strategically located at the southern end of the peninsula, specifically on the Point Utrecht Bastion within Galle Fort. This vantage point provides a complete view of any ships entering Galle Harbor¹².

The lighthouse has a fascinating history. The original structure, painted white, stood on the southwest bastion of Galle Fort. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by fire in July 1936. The current concrete lighthouse was rebuilt about 100 meters from the initial site and continues to guide ships safely into the harbor³.
