Dry Zone Botanic Gardens, Hambantota
To the Curators and Staff of Dry Zone Botanic Gardens, Hambantota,
I hope this letter finds you well amidst the vibrant flora and serene beauty of your remarkable gardens. As an admirer of nature and conservation efforts, I am writing to express my appreciation for the invaluable work you do.
The Mirijjawila Dry Zone Botanic Gardens (MDBG), sprawling across 300 acres, stand as a testament to your dedication in preserving and showcasing the unique plant species of the dry zone. Here are some aspects that truly captivate me:
- Ex-situ Conservation: Your commitment to conserving dry zone flora ex-situ is commendable. By nurturing these plants within the gardens, you contribute significantly to their survival and understanding.
- Ecosystem Study: The MDBG serves as a living laboratory for studying dry zone ecosystems. Your research and insights undoubtedly enrich our understanding of this fragile environment.
- Underutilized Species: Identifying and promoting underutilized plant species is vital for sustainable living. Your efforts to introduce these species to the local community are laudable.
- Landscape Design: The selection of suitable plant species for the dry zone landscape ensures a harmonious blend of aesthetics and ecological balance.
- Eco-Tourism: By welcoming visitors and promoting eco-tourism, you not only contribute to the national economy but also raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity.
History and Vision: The journey of MDBG began after an unsuccessful attempt during the British colonial period to establish a botanic garden in Anuradhapura. Prof. Siril Wijesundara and his team wisely chose the underutilized land in Hambantota, covering 300 acres. The presence of a perennial water source, known as “Beragamawila,” further justified this location. The gardens officially opened in November 2013 during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
